【Boston Global】Christopher Gong from Sharon Won Medal in EMass Division 2 Championship

NEW BEDFORD — As two other runners jockeyed for position in Lanes 4 and 5 in what appeared to be a race for first, Woburn junior Marcus Qualls surged ahead in Lane 3, flexing out his chest at the finish to win the 100 meters Monday afternoon in the EMass Division 2 Track & Field Championship at Greater New Bedford Vocational Tech.

His 11.13 clocking edged Somerville’s Elijah Jeffreys (11.25) and Sharon’s Christopher Gong (11.27), one of three victories for Qualls, helped propel Woburn to its first D2 title with 91.5 points, edging Central Catholic (69).

“I was kind of a little tired,” said Qualls, who also won the 200 (22.21) and was part of the Tanners’ victorious 4×100 relay (43.45).

“I was thinking in my mind like ‘ah, this isn’t good.’ Then I kind of just stepped it up and got the first place.”

According to Woburn coach Mike Fowle, “A lot of the guys that had a good chance to win their event had great days.

“And then we talked to a bunch of the guys that were kind of on the borderline and being able to score points and how if they stepped up and compiled points we’d have a chance at it, and those guys did a great job.”

There were a handful of very impressive performances.

Arlington junior Ryan Oostling dominated the long-distance races, winning both the mile (4:18.31) and two-mile (9:23.93). Somerville senior Phillips Magre narrowly beat Belmont’s Calvin Perkins in the 400, with Magre regaining the lead in the final 100 meters. His time (48.50) set a new meet record, eclipsing the old mark by .33 seconds.

Standout sophomore Jada Johnson led the Sharon girls’ squad (92 points) to what was believed to be the program’s first title, sprinting past Beverly (57). Johnson was the runner-up in the pentathlon on Thursday, and leaped to a first in long jump (17-6) and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.99) on Monday.

Senior Shira Stoller won the javelin (144-06) and placed third in the discus throw (112-08). Avonia Herbert finished second in the triple jump (37-01.25).

“We scored a lot of throwing and jumping points today which was great because that’s the strength of the team, our field events,” Sharon coach Alan Conway said.
